Economic Blackout Feb. 28: How Families Can Participate

Be part of a grassroots movement to demonstrate the collective economic power of everyday people

By Kate Fletcher, Macaroni KID Binghamton Publisher February 24, 2025

As parents, we're always thinking about the future and the kind of world we want to leave for our kids. This includes thinking about the economy, and how we, as consumers, can make a difference. That's why our family will be participating in the economic blackout on Friday, February 28th, and we wanted to share why, and invite you to join us.

You might have heard about the nationwide call for an economic blackout. The idea is simple: for 24 hours, we're going to refrain from spending money at major corporations. This is a grassroots movement, organized by groups like The People's Union USA, to demonstrate the collective economic power of everyday people.

Here's why we're participating:

  • To show our support for economic fairness: Like many families, we've felt the pinch of rising costs [of everything!]. We believe it's important to show that we're not just passive consumers, and that we want to see a more equitable economic landscape.
  • To teach our children about conscious consumerism: This is a great opportunity to talk to our kids about where their money goes, and how their choices can make an impact. We want to instill in them the importance of supporting local businesses and making informed decisions.
  • To be part of a larger movement: There's power in numbers. By joining with others across the country, we can amplify our voices and send a message to corporations.
  • To support our local community: This movement also gives us an extra reason to support our local businesses. Instead of going to large chain stores, we will be supporting shops that are locally owned and operated. And, instead of using credit cards, we will pay in cash.

Here's how you can participate:

  • Spread the word: Tell your friends and family about the economic blackout.
  • Plan your day: Think about how you can avoid spending money at major corporations on February 28th. Stock up on groceries and fill the gas tank before Friday...and look for fun, free activities to do with your family!
  • Support local businesses: Consider shopping (with cash!) at local stores and restaurants instead.
  • Join the conversation: Share your experiences on social media using relevant hashtags.

We believe that even small actions can make a big difference. Let's show corporations that we're paying attention and that we want a more just and sustainable economy. We hope you'll join us!
