Polar Playground in Binghamton: The Discovery Center's Newest Exhibit

This temporary exhibit is open select dates throughout the winter season

When the winter weather gets gray and the kids have more energy than the living room can handle, finding a place to "run it out" is a top priority for local parents. Luckily, there is a brand-new Arctic escape right in our backyard! We recently visited the brand new Polar Playland exhibit at The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier, and it is safe to say it received a massive "thumbs up" from our resident expert.

Located in the Ahearn Theater, Polar Playland transforms the museum into a festive, climate-controlled winter paradise. It offers all the magic of a snow day with none of the heavy snowsuits, soggy mittens, or frozen toes.

Highlights

The Frosty Foot Skating Rink This was, hands down, the star of the show. It’s a slick, indoor surface where kids can "skate" in their socks. While some kids practiced their balance, my son decided the best way to experience the Arctic was to scoot around on his bottom and slide on his belly like a penguin! It’s high-energy, hilarious to watch, and a perfect way to burn off steam.

The Arctic Cove Igloo For kids who love a cozy hideout, the glowing igloo is a treat. It’s a "chill-out" spot complete with a pretend fire pit. We spent quite a while "roasting" marshmallows and pretending to warm up by the fire. It’s a sweet, immersive spot for imaginative play.

Glacier Build and Play Aspiring engineers will love the "ice" foam blocks. My son loved the challenge of building them up - though, in true kid fashion, he might have enjoyed smashing them down even more!

SnowBrew Snack Shack & Snowball Toss The role-play continues at the Snack Shack, where little ones can "sell" mock hot cocoa and cookies. We also tested our aim at the Snowball Toss, which features soft, plush snowballs - allowing for a friendly "snowball fight" without the icy sting.
