The YWCA of Rochester & Monroe County has teamed up with the Upstate New York Energy Storage Engine to launch "Leading the Charge: Battery Science Camp" – a new program under the Generating Regional Opportunities in Workforce (GROW) initiative. This isn't just a science club; it's a launchpad for 8th-10th graders to explore the fascinating world of battery science and energy storage, preparing them for exciting career opportunities in STEM!
The GROW initiative aims to inspire and engage middle and high school students in meaningful learning experiences. It's designed to expand their knowledge in critical STEM fields and equip them with the skills needed for future jobs in the rapidly evolving energy sector. "Leading the Charge" is a 6-session program that will immerse students in the foundational concepts of battery storage technology, its real-world applications, and its immense significance in shaping our energy future.
Here's are the program highlights:
- Hands-On Learning: Students will explore topics like renewable energy, energy storage systems, and cutting-edge technologies.
- Creative Invention: Participants build their very own invention using energy storage concepts.
- Collaboration with Budmen Industries: Participants will even work with local innovators, Budmen Industries, on building prototypes to help solve real-world problems in their own community.
- Skill Building: Beyond technical knowledge, this club fosters essential skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
- It's FREE! Yes, there is absolutely no cost to attend this program! Students will be awarded stipends based on their participation and attendance of the science camp.
When and Where
The sessions will take place every other Saturday from November 8, 2025, to February 14, 2025 (no sessions December 20th and January 3rd), from 9-11AM at SUNY Broome in Binghamton, NY. Each session promises 2 hours of education and fun.
