What to Expect at Your Child’s Flu Shot Appointment

As the cooler weather approaches and school is back in session, flu season is right around the corner. We know that bringing your child in for their annual flu shot can be a source of anxiety for both of you, but we want to assure you it’s one of the most important things you can do to protect your family’s health.

Here at Tier Pediatrics, flu shots will be available beginning in October. To help you prepare, we’ve put together a guide on what to expect during your child’s flu shot appointment and some tips to make the experience as smooth as possible.

Before the Appointment: The Pep Talk

  • Be Honest and Calm: The most important thing you can do is to stay calm. Your child will pick up on your anxiety. Explain in simple, honest terms that they are getting a “little poke” or a “tiny pinch” to help them stay healthy and strong.
  • Avoid Negative Words: Steer clear of scary words like “shot,” “needle,” or “pain.” Instead, use neutral language like “quick squeeze” or “gentle poke.”
  • Don’t Promise the Impossible: It’s best not to say “it won’t hurt at all.” Acknowledge that they might feel a little pinch, but that it will be over very quickly.
  • Offer a Small Reward: Acknowledge their bravery! We’re equipped with stickers, but also having a small reward ready—like a trip to the park or a special treat—can give them something positive to look forward to.

During the Appointment: Distraction is Key

  • Bring a Comfort Item: A favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or toy can provide a sense of security during the process.
  • Distraction, Distraction, Distraction: This is your secret weapon. Engage your child in a distracting activity. You can:
    • Sing their favorite song.
    • Play a game like “I Spy.”
    • Tell a silly story.
    • Blow bubbles.
    • If they are old enough, let them watch a short video on your phone.
  • Hold Them Securely: For younger children, a secure, comforting hug is often the best approach. Hold them on your lap and hug them tight, which not only provides comfort but also helps keep them still. Your pediatrician or nurse will guide you on the best position for the shot.
  • Breathe Together: For older children, you can practice deep breathing exercises together. Inhale slowly and exhale, focusing on the breath to stay calm.

After the Appointment: The Follow-Up

  • Praise Their Bravery: No matter how they reacted, praise your child for their bravery. A simple “You were so brave! I’m so proud of you!” goes a long way.
  • Address Any Soreness: It’s normal for the injection site to be a little sore. You can apply a cool compress to the area if needed.
  • Watch for Minor Side Effects: Some children may experience minor side effects like a low-grade fever or mild fussiness. These are a normal sign that their immune system is learning to fight the flu. If you are concerned about any side effects, don’t hesitate to give us a call.

Why the Flu Shot is So Important

The flu shot is the most effective way to prevent influenza. While it doesn’t offer 100% protection, it significantly reduces the risk of getting the flu and, if your child does get sick, it can lessen the severity of their symptoms and lower the risk of serious complications.

Getting your child vaccinated also helps protect others—especially infants and those with compromised immune systems who may not be able to get the shot themselves. It’s a community effort, and your family’s choice to vaccinate makes a difference.

We are here to make this process as easy and stress-free as possible. If you have any questions or would like to schedule your child’s flu shot appointment, please give us a call!
