Free Summer Camp Opportunity for Broome County Kids

Applications for the Free Summer Camp are due April 1st

By Kate Fletcher, Macaroni KID Binghamton Publisher March 19, 2025

Do you know a child between the ages of 9 and 12 who doesn't have the opportunity to attend summer camp because of economic reasons? The Broome County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the New York State Sheriffs' Institute, is offering an incredible opportunity for local children to attend a week of FREE summer camp at beautiful Keuka Lake!

Campers will enjoy a week filled with swimming, sports, arts and crafts, and making lifelong memories. The 2025 New York State Sheriffs' Institute & Summer Camp is designed specifically for children who, due to economic reasons, might miss out on the joys of summer camp.

A Summer of Adventure Awaits!

Located in Penn Yan, NY, the Sheriff's Summer Camp offers a full camp experience, completely funded by the New York State Sheriffs' Institute. That means no cost for families – food, lodging, travel, and activities are all covered!

Sheriff Fred Akshar emphasizes the importance of this program: "This is a unique opportunity for families of Broome County and we want to make sure they are able to take full advantage of it. Not every family has summer camp or a summer vacation in their budget, and the Sheriff’s Summer Camp is here to help those families and their children still have the chance to make lifelong memories and unforgettable experiences at a crucial and formative time in their lives."

What to Expect at Camp:

  • Fun-filled Activities: Athletic, musical, aquatic, recreational, and creative pursuits.
  • Positive Interactions: Opportunities to connect with Sheriff Deputies and Corrections Officers.
  • Unique Experiences: Demonstrations from K9 Units, Helicopters, Motorcycles, Horses, Marine Units, and presentations on drug and alcohol awareness.
  • A Safe and Supportive Environment: A place where kids feel included, supported, and nurtured.

Dedicated Volunteers Make it Happen:

Sheriff Deputies and Corrections Officers from across the state volunteer their time, ensuring a positive and enriching experience for all campers. Corrections Officer Tyasia Batiste, a two-year volunteer, shares, "From my very first day volunteering, I fell in love with this camp. I bring my son and he loves it, because it’s truly a safe space for kids to grow, explore and keep coming back year after year for more."

Important Dates and Application Information:

  • Initial Applications: Due April 1st. Primary criteria: economically challenged children and children who can benefit from positive interaction with deputy sheriffs.
  • Full Applications: Due May 1st.
  • Camp Dates for Broome County: June 29 – July 5 and August 3 – August 9.
