Whether you're in Broome or Tioga County, there's a Pumpkin Smash event happening near you!
What is a Pumpkin Smash?
A Pumpkin Smash is a unique event that aims to reduce waste by diverting pumpkins from landfills. After Halloween, bring your used jack-o-lanterns or whole pumpkins to the Pumpkin Smash and help smash them to pieces! These smashed pumpkins can then be composted or donated to local livestock.
🔨 Broome County Pumpkin Smash:
The Broome County event is happening on Saturday, November 1st from 10am-1pm at the Broome County Regional Farmers Market located at 840 Upper Front Street, Binghamton NY 13905.
What to Expect in Binghamton:
Bring your own pumpkin or gourd to smash—or drop off for others to smash! Smashing tools and personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided to ensure everyone’s safety, meaning you should leave outside smashing tools at home. All smashed pumpkins will be composted on-site in the community compost bins, helping to reduce waste and contribute to a greener community.
Important Reminders:
- Fun is for all ages, but please note that all children under 18 must be supervised by an adult.
- Everyone will need to sign an Acknowledgement of Risk Form on the day of the event before participating in the pumpkin smashing.
- If you can't stay to smash, you can still participate! Drop off extra pumpkins at CCE starting November 1st in the marked area next to the compost bins to the right of the farmer's market building.
🎃 Tioga County Pumpkin Smash & Food Drive:
Tioga County is back for their 2nd Annual Pumpkin Smash a week later, combining eco-action with a valuable food drive to help local families!
This event takes place on Saturday, November 8th from 11am-2pm at the Tioga County Fair Grounds in Owego, NY.
What to Expect in Tioga County:
The day will feature pumpkin smashing stations (with tools and safety gear provided—leave yours at home!), fun, fall-themed games for all ages, and light refreshments to keep the energy up. The event is rain or shine, so dress for the weather!
Important Reminders:
- Bring your pumpkins, but ensure all candles and decorations have been removed.
- Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
- If you just want to donate your pumpkin, you can drop-off them between 10am-11am on November 8th.
