Explore Nature this Summer with CCE Broome's Free Family Programs

DIVE INTO SUMMER! Nature Programs will be held at Broome County Parks from June 21-August 31

Nature lovers of all ages rejoice! Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County (CCE Broome) and Broome County Parks are teaming up to offer a fantastic lineup of Summer Nature Programs this year.

Embrace the beauty of the season with exciting adventures, educational experiences, and hands-on activities designed to get you outdoors and exploring the wonders of Broome County's natural world.

Something for Everyone

The programs cater to a wide range of interests. Whether you're a seasoned hiker eager for guided nature walks, an aquatic enthusiast who wants to explore the local lakes by canoe or kayak, or simply curious about the plants and animals that call Broome County home, there's something for you!


2024 DIVE INTO SUMMER Nature Programs

Family Nature Walks (all ages)

Explore Broome County's parks with free guided walks! Led by CCE Broome educators, walks cover discoveries of the day - plants, animals, and more!  Ask questions, relax, and learn about nature - all ages welcome (children under 18 must be with an adult). There are 2 dates to choose from:

  • Sat, June 29, 9:00am - 10:30am at Nathaniel Cole Park
  • Sat, Aug 31, 1:30pm - 3:00pm at Greenwood Park


Guided Nature Paddles (for ages 5+)

Explore Whitney Point Lake at Dorchester Park by kayak or canoe! CCE Broome guides discuss the lake's plants, animals, and history on these paddles.
Bring your own kayak/canoe or rent on-site ($5/hr canoe, $8/hr kayak). Youths under 12 must be in a boat with an adult. Children under 5 are not permitted. PFDs required (provided if needed). Space is limited and registration is required. There are 4 dates to choose from:

  • Fri, June 21, 5:30pm - 7:30pm
  • Sat, July 27, 9:00am - 11:00am
  • Fri, Aug 9, 5:30pm - 7:30pm
  • Sat, Aug 31, 9:00am - 11:00am


Frog & Toad Jumping Contests 

All frog and toad fans are invited to join the fun-filled jumping contests at Greenwood Park on July 24 or Nathaniel Cole Park on August 21. Catch your own contestant (bring nets/containers if you have them) and cheer them on to victory! There are three sessions to choose from on each date (9:30am - 11am, 12pm - 1:30pm, and 2pm - 3:30pm).


Pond Safaris

Catch, learn about, and then release some fascinating pond creatures at Greenwood Park on July 6 or Nathaniel Cole Park on August 3. Nets and containers provided. There are three sessions to choose from on each date (9:30am - 11am, 12pm - 1:30pm, and 2pm - 3:30pm).


Discover Dragonflies (for ages 5+)

Explore the amazing world of dragonflies at Greenwood Park on Saturday, July 27 from 1:30pm to 3:00pm! Learn about their underwater beginnings, unique abilities, and dazzling colors. See live dragonflies at all stages of life, and even try catching and releasing them safely (optional).


Discover Fireflies

Embark on a magical evening adventure on Friday, July 12 from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm at Dorchester Park! Learn about their fascinating life cycle and witness their spectacular light show.  


Important Information:
