By Kate Fletcher, Macaroni KID Binghamton Publisher March 9, 2024

Two local organizations, Vestal Public Library and Church in the Wild, are teaming up with Neighborhood Forest to cultivate a greener community and foster environmental stewardship in young minds. This Earth Day, celebrate our planet by signing your child up to receive a free tree!

This exciting initiative allows children to connect with nature and contribute to a more sustainable future.

To reserve your free tree:

Sign up through the Vestal Public Library and pick up your free tree on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at the library's annual Seedy Saturday event.

OR

Sign up through Church in the Wild and pick up your free tree on April 20 at Sky Lake in Windsor or on April 21 at a to-be-determined location in Downtown Binghamton.

If you're not sure how to plant a tree and make sure it grows and thrives, you can refer to this online tree planting tutorial and step-by-step planting instructions. If you don't have space in your own yard, consider planting the tree with a friend or family member who does. Neighborhood Forest is developing an alternative indoor program for the future.

Offset Your Carbon Footprint with Trees
  • The average American consumes 7 trees per year and emits 20 tons of CO2.
  • One tree absorbs roughly 1 ton of CO2 throughout its life.
  • To neutralize your impact, you'd need to plant 20 trees per year.
  • To account for survival rates and paper consumption, Neighborhood Forest recommends planting 50 trees per year.

Participating in this Free Tree program offered through Neighborhood Forest and organizations like the Vestal Public Library and Church in the Wild isn't just a beautiful way to connect with nature and beautify your surroundings. It's also a meaningful act for our planet. By planting a tree, you're contributing to the fight against climate change and helping to offset your carbon footprint. So, sign up today, claim your free sapling, and take a step towards a greener future, one tree at a time.
