Halloween Candy Overload? Here's What You Can Do With It

Eat it, sell it, donate it: what are you doing with all of that Halloween candy?

By Kate Fletcher, Macaroni KID Binghamton Publisher October 23, 2023

Halloween is a fun time for kids of all ages, but it can also be a time of "too much candy". Are you wondering what to do with all of that Halloween candy?

Here are a few ideas:

1. Eat it. The top answer among the kids we surveyed was: just eat it! If this is your choice, you can recycle your Halloween candy wrappers at Your Home Public Library. From November 1st to 30th, bring your Halloween candy wrappers to the recycling box at Your Home Public Library in Johnson City, NY during regular library hours. According to Rubicon, the candy wrappers collected through Trash or Treasure™ are mailed to a recycling processor that sorts and cleans the candy wrappers before the material is shredded and pelletized. The plastic from the candy wrappers is used to create doggy bags for local animal shelters. Any paper or aluminum wrappers are recycled using traditional methods. And any food waste that accidentally ends up in the box is composted.

2. Sell it to Dinosaur Dental. Dinosaur Dental at 1700 Monroe Street in Endicott will buy your leftover Halloween candy for $1 per pound when you bring it to their office on November 1, 2023 between 1-5pm. In 2022, they collected over 220lbs of candy to send to our troops and local community organizations.

3. Donate it to Fairbanks Karate. Fairbanks Karate at 604 Vestal Parkway West in Vestal, NY will accept your leftover Halloween candy when you bring it to their studio between November 1-10, 2023. Your candy will then be shipped to Soldiers’ Angels Treats for Troops.

4. Donate it to The Discovery Center. The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier at 60 Morgan Road in Binghamton will accept your Halloween candy donations when you bring them to the Museum's Front Desk before November 20, 2023. Candy will be used to decorate their Annual Gingerbread Village exhibit.

5. Make a gingerbread house. Start preparing for the holidays by creating a festive gingerbread house adorned with your extra Halloween candy. Consider entering your creation into The Discovery Center's Annual Gingerbread Village contest!

6. Freeze it. If you're not ready to get rid of all of your Halloween candy right away, you can freeze it and enjoy it later. Most candy will last for several months in the freezer.

7. Use it in recipes. There are many recipes that use candy as an ingredient. You can use candy to make cookies, cakes, brownies, and other sweet treats for upcoming holidays.

8. Make a candy bouquet. Candy bouquets are a unique and fun way to give candy as a gift. You can find tutorials online on how to make your own candy bouquet.

9. Make a candy piñata. Candy piñatas are a great way to add fun to a party. You can fill a piñata with candy and other small prizes for guests to enjoy.
