As a child, the highlight of any day was Disney. Specifically, singing along with The Little Mermaid - after all, who better understands just what a young girl is going through than Ariel? Every child and adolescent dreams of being Part of That World - where we can't possibly be reprimanded, we're brave, confident, and strong. Of course, that must be what adulthood looks like!
As an adult, it can be easy to slip into the everyday mundane details of life and forget the magic of a well-written story and heartfelt song that Disney's The Little Mermaid never fails to provide. It’s enchanting to look back at the wonder that The Little Mermaid helped bring into our lives as children, with the wisdom of an adult to help us see just how little we understood about the way things worked.
Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting a splash party in honor of the release of The Little Mermaid 30th Anniversary Edition. There was a beautiful mix of children that live and breathe The Little Mermaid, and some that would be experiencing the magic for the first time, brought by parents who were excited to relive it through the eyes of their children. We splashed around, collected our own treasures, enjoyed special Under the Sea treats, and sank into big comfy chairs to watch The Little Mermaid – a movie that stays relevant no matter your age.
Just like being a kid again, I was instantly caught up in the magic. Looking around, almost all of the parents were singing along, and the children were eagerly joining in or straining to remember the words and catch every magical moment. It was easy to tell that each one of us parents was being transported back to our childhood, and we were just as enrapt with the heartfelt singing, earnest intent, and longing that comes through and translates so clearly, from ages one to ninety-nine.
Our copy of The Little Mermaid now sits proudly on our shelf, among our handful of family favorites that we will watch over and over again – just where it was 30 years ago when I was a child.
After sharing the magic with my children, I eagerly look forward to sharing it with my grandchildren someday.
If you’re looking for your way back to the magic, you can find it in Disney’s The Little Mermaid 30th Anniversary Edition which is being released on DVD, Digital, and Blu-Ray on February 26. |
